8 Tips to Help You Achieve Your Zen When Life Gets Crazy

To achieve our life and career goals we create routines that heighten our anxiety and stress levels. We move too fast to pause and focus on what really matters – our health/lifestyle and those around us. Zen teaches us to re-calibrate and enjoy all of the little things around us that truly matter. It’s a journey to improve our lives with calm, focus, and chaos elimination.

A Zen state of mind lets you enjoy the slightest moment of peace each day – the ones you would normally not notice for what it is. It allows you to appreciate your morning coffee, hi from a neighbor, the warmth from your jacket, a book, and just about anything that we would normally take for granted.

Most importantly, achieving your Zen will help you eliminate all the noise and negativity around you. You can live a life in such a way that the behavior of others cannot destroy your inner peace. Here are some helpful tips for de-stressing your life and reaching your inner peace.

There are several steps you can follow to start living the Zen lifestyle, but to get it right you’ll need the following eight tips. Pause, meditate, stop worrying, and start showing a loving attitude towards things that are out of your control.

  1. Learn to Pause and Close Your Eyes

As often as you might have heard “pause and close your eyes,” it is one of the most important steps to achieving your Zen. Every day we move too fast that even when we’re on “breaks” we’re in anticipation of what’s next. This act isn’t about taking such breaks or shutting your eyes when you’re handling a task.

It’s about taking a 5-10 minutes break away from your desk, task, or routine. You can just sit back alone and close your eyes. Gaze inwards. Keep everything still. Command your attention on what you have to do next and just listen to your breath.

2. Learn to Return When You Wonder

It’s okay for your mind to wander – it’s a certainty. So, when you notice your thoughts drifting, smile in recognition and shift your attention back to your breath. You can remain focused on your breath by counting. Doing this will help not only your mind relax but also your body. And when you finally master how to pause in high anxiety situations, you’ll have the power to re-energize at any point.

3. Stop Worrying About Every Detail

If you always worry about getting everything in place and planning things in the last detail, you’ll always experience high anxiety levels. The stress of worrying about everything is severely harmful to both our mental and physical health.

Don’t bother about where to sit, how many numbers to count, when to take a break, whether or not you can’t focus on your breath. The most important thing is to start. This practice also applies to your everyday activities. Stop worrying about figuring everything out. As long as you’ve started, you’re good.

4. Maintain an Exercise Routine

Exercising will always be crucial to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Research has proven that exercising helps with cognitive function. It helps us remember things and think better. It’s not about getting a gym membership without using it or going only when you feel like it.

You don’t have to spend tons of money on gym equipment or even memberships. Exercising doesn’t always have to be about doing strenuous activities. You can try yoga. In fact, yoga gives you more focus and clarity and it helps you meditate. Get a yoga mat and carve out a convenient time within your busy schedule and commit to it.

5. Feed your body the right way

You might not realize this but what you put in your body can cause just as much stress as external factors do.  When you feed your body sugars, dairy, fried foods and processed meals you are causing a reaction within the body that sets off an inflammatory response. When your body is in that response your white blood cells go into a flight or fight mode attaching your body from invaders.

Although most people don’t think of food as a type of invader, our body does.  For example did you know one can of pop can cause your body to shut down for hours while it defends itself from the overwhelming amount of sugar invading your organs and blood stream. Doing this day in and day out puts you at risk for chronic illness and lowers your body’s immunity significantly, since it’s so focused on the “invader” you just feed it.

Try implementing more whole foods like fruits and vegetables, into your diet.  Juicing is one of the best ways to heal your body from inflammation.  It allows your body to absorb easier and contains more nutrients per ounce then traditional eating. I highly recommend Amzchef Slow Juicer.  The reviews are great and from personal experience it’s easy to clean and extremely quiet, so you don’t have to worry about waking the kids.

6. Do Something You Enjoy

It is one thing to treat yourself to activities that you enjoy but are strenuous and it is another thing to choose relaxing activities. A Zen lifestyle is about relaxing, so try focusing on things that you enjoy but are also relaxing. It can be just about anything from watching your favorite show, drinking tea, knitting, reading, taking a stroll, swimming, or any other thing you enjoy.

Find relaxation and peace in what makes you happy. Tapping into your Zen can prove difficult if you’ve had a long and stressful day. In times like that, instead of worrying about following your routine, you can quickly treat yourself to something you enjoy. It could be something as simple as talking to your favorite person.

7. Better Sleep

You cannot fully tap into your Zen if you neglect getting a good night’s sleep. Sleep is the ultimate form of relaxation you can get. And when we don’t get enough of it, we tend not to be at our best.  Studies show that getting adequate sleep helps improve brain function, mood, blood sugars and overall immune support.  Shoot for getting between 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep. If you find yourself struggling to fall asleep try doing calming activities before bed like meditation or reading.  I highly recommend the app Calm.  It has everything from sleep stories, 5 minute medication to breathing exercises.

8. Build a Loving Attitude Towards Everything

One of the best outcomes from a Zen lifestyle is an appreciation for just about everything in life, including things that suck. However, showing an appreciation for things and being at peace isn’t a stage you get to at some point. It’s something you build.

With a Zen lifestyle, you can determine how things influence you, but you have to first decide that’s how you want to live. When it gets hard to appreciate sad or negative outcomes, that’s where meditation comes in. When you get disappointing news, take it with a loving attitude. When you fail to achieve even the smallest task, take it with a loving attitude – and choose to try again instead of complaining and tearing yourself down.

While that might be easier said than done. You cannot become a Zen master without working on your attitude towards just about everything.
