It’s Time to Ditch the Shaving Cream

For years I shaved using shaving cream, thinking nothing of it. I felt like it was an essential part of shaving. Besides the obvious benefit of the razor gliding smoothly over my legs it also, moisturized, cleansed and allowed for a closer shave. What I didn’t realize however, was the amount of toxins hidden in them. So essentially what I was doing, by shaving, was allowing those toxins to enter my body through my skin.

So what are these so called toxins, you might ask?

Let’s Start with the Base

The base of the Shaving Cream is often made of Mineral Oil and Propylene Glycol. Mineral oil is derived from petroleum, also known as crude oil or gasoline and Propylene Glycol is often found in antifreeze.

Next is the Foaming Agent

The Foaming Agent in shaving creams is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate which is also found in cosmetic products like soaps and toothpaste. When applied and absorbed into our skin the sulfate often mimics estrogen and has been found to be contaminated with Ethylene Oxide, a substance shown to cause cancer.

Then comes the Spry

How many products do you own that are in aerosol cans? Well this gem of a toxin contains butane, xylene, or formaldehyde. All known to contain carcinogens. I feel that aerosols will soon be a thing of the past but, still worth mentioning since the toxicity is so high.

Lastly let’s talk about Fragrance

This one’s important to mention. In the US fragrance, as an ingredient, is where companies legally list their proprietary ingredients for a product. The FDA has approved over fifteen hundred chemicals to qualify for this category providing the perfect hiding spot for possible toxins. Companies who have nothing to hide will usually disclose the ingredients, if asked. So it never hurts to reach out and request a products fragrance list.

So where should you go from here? As we all know, water alone doesn’t work and your typical soap is usually to thin, causing cuts and nicks. But there is hope. I found one amazing solution that is toxic free and works well…. Shaving Soaps and Lotions!

Shaving Soaps and Body Lotion Bars

Have you ever heard of these? These beauties have been around since the 1700’s. Before manufacturing, toxic materials and technology woman and men would use shaving soaps. Made with natural products like walnut oil and herbs these soaps were designed to be thicker and smell amazing. Today they are just as great and are still free of aerosols, base agents and foaming ingredients.

The Ritual Body Lotion Bar is one of my favorites. It’s made with shea butter, olive oil, beeswax and essential oils. Can i just say the smell is amazing! It can be used as a shaving lotion or after shower lotion for the whole body. A little goes a long way and not only does it prevent me from cutting myself it also soothes my skin after I’m done. It’s one of the cleanest product companies I have found out there and the following for these products in impressive.
